Drop in tourism fuels difficult time for Maine businesses

Maine businesses had a slow holiday weekend over the Indigenous People’s Day holiday weekend due to the lack of tourism amidst the pandemic.

Revenue down by 50 percent for nearly 40 percent of businesses according to The Maine Tourism Associations–with some businesses reporting being down 75 percent.

Tony Cameron, CEO of the Maine Tourism Association says rural areas like Acadia National Park and Bar Haror saw an a higher volume of visitors, but the capacity restrictions limited them.

“It’s the heart and soul of Maine, it’s really the backbone and a strong tourism economy is going to have a huge trickle-down effect for the rest of the state’s economy,” MTA CEO Tony Cameron said to our information partners at CBS 13. “We were doing everything we can to stay positive and it is resilient, people will come back to Maine.”

Cameron says there will be other opportunities for growth heading into the winter months when ski resorts become more popular.
