PORTLAND, Maine (AP) An education technician at an elementary school has been arrested on charges including sexual exploitation of a child, police and school officials said.

Benjamin Conroy, 32, was being held at York County Jail and is also charged with a battery of other sex crimes, police said. Conroy was arrested Wednesday.

Portland Schools Superintendent Xavier Botana said in a letter to the school community Thursday that charges of sexual exploitation and dissemination and possession of sexual explicit material were related to victimization of a student in a program for students on the autism spectrum. Conroy “has been ordered not to come to the school or have any contact with any of our students or their families,” Botana wrote.

Conroy’s arrest came after an investigation into two separate cases, the Portland Press Herald reported. Police said the investigation started Oct. 5 after a woman reported she received disturbing images via an online dating platform, the paper reported.

A phone call to a number under Conroy’s name was not returned. It was unclear Friday if he was represented by an attorney.
