A plan to revitalize downtown Sanford is getting a shot in the arm.

A $25 million federal grant will be used to reconstruct roads and sidewalks, improve parking and install energy-efficient streetlights.

As part of the plan, the SanfordNet fiber-optic network will be extended to the downtown and mill district.

Also, a new park-and-ride will be built for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employees.

The Portland Press Herald reports that more than 500 Sanford residents work at the shipyard, more than any other town in Maine.

Efforts to revitalize the downtown area will also be supported by an additional $10 million in local and state funding.
