Ethics Commission approves investigation into political ad targeting candidate for Maine governor Ben Midgley

Maine’s Ethics Commission has voted to investigate Republican candidate for governor Bobby Charles over a website targeting his opponent, Ben Midgley.

The commission’s vote Wednesday comes after a complaint alleging that the website midgeleyexposed.com contains a false statement claiming the site is not paid for by any candidate or candidate’s committee.

The Midgley campaign says a consultant with Charles was behind the website.

The Charles campaign denied the claim, saying a $50 expenditure used to link the consultant to the site was reimbursement for a different domain.

The site has been taken down and is no longer accessible.
