WINTHROP, Maine (AP)   The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has confirmed the presence of an aggressive type of milfoil in part of Cobbosseecontee Lake.

DEP Commissioner Paul Mercer said Eurasian milfoil is confined to the north end of the lake, and he’s confident that a rapid response will prevent its spread. Several agencies have searched for and removed plants since the discovery last month by the Friends of Cobbossee Watershed.

This is the second Maine water body with Eurasian milfoil. The other is a 28-acre pond in Scarborough.

Officials say the discovery highlights the risks of invasive species including plants, fish, and other organisms such as zebra mussels.
