Ex-Maine Baseball Player Faces Trial For Rape Charges

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) — A University of Maine coach says he knew of no reports of misconduct against a former university baseball player who is facing charges of raping six women in Delaware.

The Bangor Daily News reports head coach Nick Derba said five players who were on the team with 22-year-old Clay Conaway, of Georgetown, said they also had no knowledge of reports of misconduct.

Conaway was arraigned on six counts of second-degree rape in September. He has pleaded not guilty.

Conaway appeared in eight baseball games of UMaine during the 2015 season. He left in May 2016 and then attended the University of Delaware.

Defense attorney Joe Hurley told The News Journal it’s “a daunting atmosphere right now because people jump to conclusions.”
