AUGUSTA, Maine (AP)   A proposal to continue an industry-funded lobster marketing group is up for a key vote in the Maine Statehouse.

Members of Maine’s lobster industry pay fees to support the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative. The group exists to promote the Maine lobster brand in the media and in the restaurant business.

The Legislature needs to approve an extension of the group’s existence for it to continue beyond this year. The Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Marine Resources is set to consider a proposal to extend the collaborative on Wednesday.

Maine is by far the biggest lobster producing state in the country. Members of the industry used a Feb. 5 hearing to call for an extension of the marketing group. However, they want it to be more transparent with its finances.
