A grieving family mourned the loss of a 12-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a bus in Rockland on Friday.

The crash took place around 2:20 p.m. Friday after noon at the intersection of Eliza Steel Drive and Broadway at the bus stop of 12-year-old Brayden Callahan.

According to Rockland police, Callahan exited the bus and was crossing the street to his home, walking in front of the bus. The driver ran him over with three passenger side tires.

The driver told police he just didn’t see Callahan cross the street. He wasn’t suspected of driving while intoxicated but was charged and convicted with an OUI back in 2015. He has since been placed on administrative leave.

Friends of Callahan made a memorial for him at the same intersection where he was struck by the bus.

Callahan’s Grandmother Peggy Devarney told CBS 13 news the support from the community means the world to the family.

“I’m just so happy that he has so many caring people out there,” said DeVarney. “Makes me feel better that we’re not in this alone.”

DeVarney says Callahan will be remembered as a quiet yet caring child who deeply loved his family and friends, and that this should never have taken place.

“No family should have to go through this,” Devarney said. ” No parents should ever have to bury their child, especially under these circumstances.”

Rockland Police stated RSU 13 and the driver are cooperating in the current investigation.
