The number of fatal motorcycle accidents in Maine so far this year has already matched the total recorded in 2021.

A crash in Baldwin on Sunday marked the 21st fatal motorcycle crash this year.

According to the Bangor Daily News, state road officials last week formed a special motorcycle safety task force to address the increase in fatal crashes.

Officials haven’t identified a definitive cause for the increase, saying crashes involve people of all age groups and experience levels. However, they say there has been an uptick in the number of motorcyclists on the road.

Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says about two-thirds of the motorcyclists killed in crashes this year were not wearing helmets.
