A suit filed by the Department of Justice seeking access to Mainers’ voter registration data has been thrown out.

A federal judge dismissed the suit Thursday, siding with Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who says the data belongs to the state.

The information would have included Social Security and driver’s license numbers as well as party affiliations.

The DOJ claimed the information would be used to make sure voter registration laws are being enforced.
