Fiery crash in Lincoln County leaves driver dead

The driver of a vehicle that crashed into a tree and burst into flames in Southport on Wednesday morning died at the scene.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and firefighters responded to the crash on Cross Road around 12:40 a.m. Wednesday.

By the time they arrived, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, with some spreading to nearby trees. Police say the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver’s identity was not available Wednesday morning.

Police say speed appears to be a factor in the crash.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.
