The Maine Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire in Levant.

Fire officials said the blaze broke out at a home on Avenue Road early Monday. A resident says he woke up to a strange smell around 2 or 3 a.m. and opened his door to find part of the wall in front of him on fire.

Five people lived at the home. One died and two others were hospitalized.

The Red Cross and Maine Department of Environmental Protection were at the scene of the fire on Monday.
