The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office has tentatively identified the two people who died in a fire at a Portland apartment complex over the weekend.

The fire broke out early Sunday morning at the apartment complex on St. Lawrence Street in the city’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood.

The Fire Marshal’s Office released an update about the fire on Tuesday, tentatively identifying the victims as 45-year-old Nicole Niehoff and 40-year-old Jake Millett, both from Portland.

A confirmation of their identities was still pending analysis from the State Medical Examiner.

The office says the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it’s believed to have started on the rear second-floor porch before spreading.

Investigators say they’re confident foul play was not involved.
