NORTHPORT, Maine (AP) _ Maine firefighters say they responded to a house fire and had to return two more times to battle the flames before the fire was completely extinguished.

Northport fire crews were first called to the home around 7 p.m. Sunday, where the homeowner had noticed her home was on fire _ fleeing outside with her dog. WABI-TV reports the house was engulfed by the time firefighters arrived.

Northport Fire Chief Paul Rooney says firefighters worked more than seven hours to extinguish the flames, only to be called back an hour later for a flare-up. Around 7 a.m. Monday, crews returned to fight a third flare-up.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. The house was destroyed, but no one was injured.
