First responders saved a group of women and young children who were stranded on an island in the Kennebec River near West Forks on Thursday.

According to CBS 13 officials say one of their rafts got stuck on a rock after going through rapids. Once they were stranded, the second raft got damaged. To get them out safely, responders used a canoe.

The rafts used were meant for lakes, not white water. Officials warn people to use the proper equipment while going out on the water.
