FREEPORT (WGME) — A section of downtown Freeport is closed to vehicles for the weekends in an attempt to attract more people to the downtown businesses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The two-block section of Main Street will be closed to vehicles from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The closure goes from Howard Place near the Lobster Cooker and Pub to Bow Street which is by Linda Bean’s Maine Kitchen and Topside Tavern.

According to marketing group “Visit Freeport” the closure will be evaluated every week.

If not helpful or there are health concerns it will stop after two weeks.

If the plan is successful it could be in place until Labor Day.
