A Florida man will spend 27 months behind bars for a credit card scheme targeting people in multiple states including Maine.
Police say 26-year-old Kevens Louis pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. According to our info partners at CBS-13, Louis and three other men used the dark web to find people’s personal information and then opened credit cards in their names. Prosecutors said the men would then track the delivery of the cards using the United State Postal Service’s Informed Delivery service and intercept them before the victims could get them.
Prosecutors said one area that was targeted was Kittery Point in Maine.
Two of the men, Lucson Appolon and Peter Belony, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to two years behind bars. A fourth man, Fred Alcius, remains a fugitive.
Maine’s Bureau of Consumer Credit Protection says you have the option to opt out of credit card offers to help avoid becoming a target of a similar scheme. They also suggest freezing your credit will all three credit bureaus, so that new accounts can’t be opened under your name even if someone does obtain your personal information.
