SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) Officials have cancelled a Maine high school football game over concerns about hand, foot and mouth disease.

Scarborough High School said in a letter sent to parents Thursday that they are calling off Friday’s homecoming game against Massabesic High School because Massabesic has reported cases of the virus which leads to the disease. Hand, foot and mouth disease is highly contagious. Symptoms include fever, painful sores around the mouth and a skin rash on the hands and feet. Most people recover from the disease in about a week without medical treatment.

Scarborough officials say they understand the news is “disappointing,” but the health and safety of the students is their top priority. Scarborough has not said whether the game will be rescheduled. Their next football game will be Oct. 6.
