A group of Maine Republicans including former Governor Paul LePage are calling for an investigation into the use of funds raised for survivors of the Lewiston mass shooting.

Senate Republicans said Tuesday they’re asking the Government Oversight Committee to investigate the Maine Community Foundation, which raised more than $6 million for survivors.

Republicans say nearly $2 million went to groups that have no connection with the victims of the shooting.

LePage, who’s running for Congress in Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, said in a statement:

“Ann and I were pleased to help raise over $474,000 for victims and their families involved in the Lewiston shooting. We were overwhelmed at the time by the outpouring of support for people in my hometown. Now, I am incredibility concerned money intended for these victims and their families may have been diverted elsewhere.”

According to reporting from our info partners at CBS 13 news last year, donors had the option of giving to a fund that went to the broader community impacted by the tragedy.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office said it found no evidence of wrongdoing after investigating last year.
