A former bus driver in Gray and New Gloucester has been charged with misdemeanor assault after allegedly smacking an autistic student on the side of the head.

According to the Portland Press Herald, a witness reported the assault on August 14 after a trip to Saco. The student’s mother, Melissa Seavey, says the driver hit her son after he wouldn’t buckle his seat belt.

The driver, 58-year-old Raymond Files, no longer works for Maine School Administrative District 15, according to Superintendent Craig King.

Files could face a maximum of 364 days behind bars and a $2,000 fine. His court date is scheduled for October 31 in Biddeford.
