NASA has announced that Caribou native Jessica Meir will serve as the commander of an upcoming mission to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a historic milestone for the Maine astronaut. Meir, who previously gained international acclaim for participating in the first all-female spacewalks in 2019 and 2020, will lead a diverse crew of international astronauts. This mission represents a significant leadership role, as she will be responsible for overseeing scientific experiments and station maintenance during her six-month stay in orbit.

The mission is set to launch in the coming months from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During her time aboard the ISS, Meir and her crew will conduct critical research in biology, Earth science, and physical sciences that cannot be performed on the ground. For Meir, this return to space is the culmination of years of rigorous training and a lifelong dream that began in the North Maine Woods, where she first looked at the stars and imagined traveling among them.

Back in her home state, the news has sparked immense pride and excitement. Local educators and community leaders in Caribou and beyond are hailing Meir as an inspiration for the next generation of Maine scientists and explorers. As she prepares for liftoff, Meir continues to emphasize the importance of global cooperation in space exploration and the unique perspective of seeing Earth from above without borders.
