Farms are opening their doors to visitors eager to pet alpacas, check out solar-powered goat pastures and taste lavender cookies.

About 100 farms will be open to the public across Maine on Sunday. It’s the state’s 29th annual Open Farm Day, which provides residents with a chance to meet with Maine farmers and get to know their work and products.

Most farms are open from 10 a.m. to mid-afternoon. Some of the farms are offering activities such as field tours, hay rides and milking animals.

Maine has more than 8,000 farm operations and about 1.5 million acres of farmland. Farms participating in Open Farm Day are in all corners of the vast state, ranging from clematis-producing Hummingbird Farm in Turner to Tide Mill Organic Farm in Edmunds.
