FRYEBURG (WGME) — The police chief in Fryeburg is resigning after a complaint was filed in the spring with the Teamsters union.

Josh Potvin has been on paid administrative leave since May after the Teamsters union representing some of officers in Fryeburg filed an undisclosed complaint against the chief.

“Being a police officer, you’re held in very high regard,” Teamsters Local 340 Business Agent Traci St. Clair said. “We also need to remember that in every profession there is the good and the bad.”

The complaint is still confidential, the Teamsters union is saying that four officers are represented by Teamsters in Fryeburg. They say the complaint was filed on May 18 and Potvin was placed on administrative leave. The complaint has also been filed with several state agencies, which could take further action.

“It is possible, these outside agencies are going to review the complaint,” St. Clair said. “They have different types of jurisdiction, one is not the same as the other, so from there they’ll review the complaint and see if there is sufficient information or basis on moving forward under their process.”

Potvin will technically remain on as chief until July 31. The acting chief is Lt. Mike McAllister. The town will have to hire or appoint a new chief.
