There’s no confirmed tornado, but a funnel cloud was spotted over Beaver Cove at Moosehead Lake in northwestern Maine Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service Caribou office issued a tornado warning for much of the area based on radar indications.

“The radar showed us strong to severe thunderstorms that were spinning,” said NWS meteorologist James Sinko. “Doppler showed all those storms spinning, so we issued tornado warnings.

The funnel cloud in Beaver Cove was reported at 4:26 p.m. and was later confirmed. Funnel clouds are spinning storms, but do not hit the ground as tornado do.

Tornadoes are rare in Maine, although there are an average of two per year in the state.

The National Weather Service in Caribou is looking for reports of wind damage, hail, or evidence of tornadoes from the storms and is encouraging the public to submit photos.

“Pictures are worth 1000 words — let us know if we can share your pictures,” the Caribou office said in a social media post.
