An executive order signed by Governor Janet Mills on Friday loosens pandemic-related restrictions for houses of worship.

According to the order, houses of worship can accommodate five people per 1,000 square feet of space, or up to 50 people, whichever is greater. Previously, the gathering limit was 50.

The administration says the change comes as a result of improving public health metrics when it comes to coronavirus.

There have also been changes made to the state’s COVID-19 checklists for performing arts venues and seated food and drink service, which allows for expanded singing opportunities in circumstances where physical distancing and mask wearing are being observed.
