CROUSEVILLE, Maine (WGAN) A young moose that was rescued after getting trapped by snow has died.

WLBZ-TV reports a group dug the calf out of the snow in Crouseville on Monday. Barbetta Ann Bowker shared a picture of the rescue effort on Facebook.

Lauren Allen’s husband was among the small crowd of helpers. Allen says Maine game wardens responded to help load the distressed animal onto a flat sled and move her to stable ground. The Portland Press Herald later reported that wardens had to put down the animal as it was sick.

Allen says the moose got stranded last week too and needed help. Community members think the calf had lost its mother.
