Gov. Janet Mills has released plans to improve school bus safety after two fatal bus accidents late last year.

On Tuesday, Gov. Mills announced a proposed $4.3 million in her supplemental budget that would be set aside for improved safety measures like retrofitting school buses with crossing arms and anti-pinch door sensors.

Mills also signed an executive order establishing the Maine School Transportation Safety Commission which will review existing statutes and rules.

In November, 12-year-old Brayden Callahan was hit and killed by a school bus in Rockland, weeks before 5-year-old Simon Gonzalez was hit by a school bus in Standish.
