An independent commission tasked with investigating the Lewiston mass shooting may get subpoena power if a piece of emergency legislation goes through.

Gov. Janet Mills and the Maine Attorney General introduced the legislation after the commission requested subpoena power during their first meeting in November.

The legislation, which has bipartisan support, would allow the commission to obtain documents and compel witness testimony, and seek compliance through the courts if necessary.

The bill requires a two-thirds majority in the legislature to pass.

The commission was expected to hold its second public meeting Thursday morning.
