PORTLAND, Maine (WGAN) Maine’s seafood industry is set to receive $10 million in grants for infrastructure upgrades.

The administration of Governor Janet Mills announced Wednesday that the funding is part of the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan.

Mills says the Seafood Infrastructure Investment Program will launch early next year and will be administered through the Maine Department of Marine Resources. She says the program, which uses federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act, can be used to upgrade buildings, equipment and utilities.

Mills made the announcement during a visit to Luke’s Lobster on the Portland waterfront.

“Getting support from the state is necessary and appreciated so that we can continue to focus on ensuring a strong market for Maine’s fishermen and lobstermen both here in Maine and nationwide,” said Luke Holden, Founder and CEO of Luke’s Lobster.

The governor’s office says the Department of Marine Resources will begin accepting applications for grants in the coming months.

Wednesday’s announcement comes as part of Mills’ “Maine Heritage Industry Week.” Earlier in the week she visited a blueberry growing business in Hope to announce another $20 million in federal funding to upgrade agriculture infrastructure in the state.
