AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Lawmakers are following through on a promise to demand Maine’s Republican governor apologize for an “utterly unprovoked and unacceptable diatribe” against a legislator.

Republican Sen. Roger Katz and Democratic Rep. Anne-Marie Mastraccio on Wednesday asked for Gov. Paul LePage’s apology on behalf of the Legislature’s Government Oversight Committee.

LePage’s office didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.

LePage at an Aug. 20 committee meeting called Republican Sen. Tom Saviello “the most repugnant human being” he’s ever seen.

Katz ruled the governor out of order. LePage then stormed out of the committee meeting.

LePage was answering questions about a report that found no evidence that he played any role in a decision to divert shipments of spruce and fir from public lands. Saviello had pushed for an investigation into the issue.
