AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN) Governor Janet Mills says that she will allow ranked choice voting to become law without her signature.

In a memo to the legislature on Friday, Mills said the bill will become law in January. She said ranked choice gives voters greater voice and encourages civility, but expressed concern over costs, logistics, and lack of funding for the bill.

Mills says that by not signing the bill, she’s giving the legislature an opportunity to appropriate funds for it during the second session.

Ultimately, it means voters will use ranked choice in the president election next year, but not in the primaries.
