WASHINGTON, D.C. (WGAN) Governor Janet Mills and members of Maine’s congressional delegation were in Washington on Monday as President Biden signed a sweeping infrastructure bill into law.
Gov. Janet Mills issued a statement following the signing of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure package, which allocated millions for roads, bridges, highways and broadband across the country.
“This once-in-generation investment will help us fix our roads and bridges, expand high-speed broadband, improve access to clean drinking water, and build a cleaner, more sustainable transportation network – all while putting Maine people to work in good-paying jobs,” said Gov. Mills.
The governor’s office says the package will provide millions in funding to the state of Maine over the next five years, including $1.3 billion for bridges and highways, $19 million to expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure, $241 million for public transportation, and $74 million for airports.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Independent Sen. Angus King were among a group of nine senators who co-wrote the legislation. Sen. Collins says Maine will benefit from the package, especially as many rural Mainers still struggle to get access to high-speed internet.
“One of the many provisions that will have a significant impact on Maine is the largest-ever investment for broadband, which will provide our state with $300 million to expand high-speed internet access to rural and unserved areas,” Collins said.
Sen. King also touted the long-term benefits of the plan, saying, “It’s nearly impossible to capture just how much good this will do for the State of Maine – but in the months and years ahead, we will see the legislation’s impacts unfold before our eyes and throughout our communities.”
