AUGUSTA, Maine (WGAN)  Gov. Paul LePage has requested a presidential disaster declaration to help the state recover from October’s severe wind storm.

In a statement on Thursday, the governor asked for federal aid to repair $4.7 million in public infrastructure damage in 13 counties.

LePage says that level of damage exceeds the requirements for requesting federal assistance. The governor says the declaration is for public aid, and not individual assistance, though some Maine businesses will be covered under the declaration.

The storm knocked out power to about 500,000 power customers in the state, more than the ice storm of 1998.
