The administration of Governor Janet Mills on Friday updated their color-coded coronavirus risk advisory system for Maine’s schools.

All of Maine’s 16 counties remain green, which means in-person learning can take place. The system is updated every two weeks, but York and Penobscot counties will be reassessed next Friday to determine if they meet the threshold for yellow, which advises a mix of in-person and remote learning, or red, which is when health officials would recommend remote learning only.

The administration cited a recent rise in coronavirus cases in York and Penobscot counties, especially with ongoing outbreak investigations in those areas.

The designations are only used to make recommendations, and the final decisions come down to individual school districts. Even with a green designation, many schools are implementing a hybrid model, with some days of remote learning and some days of in-person learning.
