The grandson of a former Republican state lawmakers in Maine has reportedly died in the war between Israel and Hamas.

The Portland Press Herald reports that 27-year-old Aryeh Ziering was among those who were killed when Hamas attacked Israel over the weekend.

Ziering was a captain with the Israel Defense Forces.

He was the grandson of Howard Trotsky, a longtime high school teacher, former state senator and a prominent member of the Jewish community in Bangor.

The leaders of Congregation Beth Israel in Bangor, which is Trotsky’s synagogue, confirmed Ziering’s death in a statement Monday.

In the statement, the synagogue said, “We send our love and sympathy to Howard and to all of Aryeh’s family in Israel.”
