AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Groups that are suing Maine Republican Gov. Paul LePage’s administration over voter-approved Medicaid expansion have filed court documents challenging the governor’s claims that the Legislature must appropriate funding first.

Maine Equal Justice Partners sued after the administration missed an April deadline for an application to receive $525 million in annual federal funding.

The Portland Press Herald reports the group said in a court filing Friday submitting the application “does not require funds not already available.”

The LePage administration says the deadline doesn’t start until money is appropriated.

LePage has long opposed Medicaid expansion. He says it would cost taxpayers about $50 million in fiscal 2019 and require hiring 100 workers.

Arguments on the lawsuit are scheduled for later this month.
