A 19-year-old was taken into custody in Portland early on Sunday after a foot chase.

Police attempted to stop a van with no front license plate. The van continued onward, with the occupants then exiting the vehicle at the intersection of Congress Street and Montgomery Street.

The officer caught up with 19-year-old Salahoudine Eleyeh, who was arrested near Peppermint Park. He was charged with drug trafficking and refusing to submit to arrest.

Interim Police Chief Heath Gorham said a weapon was also recovered from the area where Eleyeh was arrested. He says they’ve seized five guns off the streets in the last ten days.

“Every gun, being carried by a person engaged in criminal activity, represents a threat to our community,” Gorham said in a statement. “Every gun taken off the street by our officers makes our city safer for our residents and visitors. We are very proud of the work they do each and every day.”
