WESTBROOK (WGME) – After closing their doors three years ago, Happy Wheels opened their new space in Westbrook on Saturday.

A line wrapped around the building with about a hundred people waiting patiently to lace up their skates.

The new building, much like the old, has the classic skating rink with skate rentals, an arcade and snack bar.

Before closing their Portland location in 2019, Happy Wheels had existed in the Portland area since the 1950’s.

“We saw their grand parents, we saw their parents, and now we see their kids,” said the new owner, Derek Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald worked for more than 20 years at the old location since he was 16 years old.

He says it was an emotional day for the community as they re-opened their doors.

“It’s an important staple of the community. Schools, recreational camps, Girl Scout groups, kid’s birthday parties, adult parties, I mean you name it we’ve done it. And it was a large community loss when we closed, it’s just a lot of people.”

Happy Wheels opens back up Saturday from 8 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
