HARTFORD (WGME) – Voters in the town of Hartford, which is in Oxford County, will decide if and when liquor should be sold in its upcoming election.
“The grapes have been flourishing here,” Bonaventura Vineyards Vintner Chad Casey said.
Casey and his wife, Jen Bonaventura, had wanted to start their own vineyard.
They found the perfect spot in Hartford.
“It’s got a pretty good set up,” Casey said. “It already had a nice field for us to put the vines in and the sun is good for the grapes.”
“It’s really amazing, honestly, to go back and look at the original pictures and see how far we’ve come in a relatively short period of time,” Bonaventura said.
Now the couple wants to expand once again, hoping to sell and serve wine in Hartford.
“We have always envisioned the barn would be a small tasting room,” Bonaventura said.
There’s just one thing stopping them.
“We were really surprised ourselves, honestly, when we found out the town was still dry,” Bonaventura said.
“But I believe prohibition started in Maine, so now thinking back, it’s not that surprising,” Casey said.
Over time, most communities have taken a stance on the matter.
The Hartford town clerk says it hasn’t been voted on before, but now it will come Tuesday.
Voters will be asked five things, which will essentially help them do one thing, sell alcohol.
“I think it’s going to pass,” Hartford resident Beth Lacey said. “I’m hoping it will pass. I think this is great for the town.”
There have been some concerns about the vote leading to things like bars in the community.
“So it does open up another can of worms, but those places will also have to get their own license,” Casey said.
The two are hopeful other residents will see what they’re going for and approve the measures.
