DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine (AP)   The board of directors of a health group in Maine has voted unanimously to move forward with a merger agreement with a rural hospital in the state.

The Northern Light Health Board of Directors says the vote to merge Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft took place on Wednesday. The 25-bed hospital would become the latest to join Northern Light, which includes major hospitals in the state such as Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and Mercy Hospital in Portland.

Northern Light president and chief executive officer Michelle Hood says the merger would improve access to health care in rural Piscataquis County, which includes some of the most remote parts of Maine. The merger would eventually need to be approved by the Maine Legislature.
