High levels of lead detected at several Lewiston schools

LEWISTON – Although there are no reports of children being poisoned officials are worried about high levels of lead detected in several Lewiston Area schools recently.  The test results led to shutting off access to water in several areas of the affected schools.

The schools affected are:

  • Montello Elementary
  • Farwell Elementary
  • McMahon Elementary
  • Longley School
  • Lewiston Regional Technical Center

Healthy Androscoggin which works to promote healthy living says Lewiston and Auburn have the highest rate of childhood lead poisoning in Maine.

The lead was detected in regularly scheduled tests and more testing will be done over February break.  In the meantime the schools will provide safe drinking water to students and staff.
