Hiram man fatally shot by trooper responding to domestic violence call

A man was fatally shot by a state trooper in Hiram on Friday morning.

Maine State Police say Trooper Zachary Fancy responded to a residence for reports of domestic violence. When he arrived at the scene, he was reportedly met by a man pointing a firearm at him.

Fancy then fatally shot the man, identified as 39-year-old Steven Nelson of Hiram.

The Maine Attorney General’s Office is investigating the use of force, and the State Police Major Crimes Unit will complete a criminal investigation.

Trooper Fancy was placed on administrative leave, which is standard for all officer-involved shootings.
