PORTLAND, Maine (AP) The Maine Medical Center has hired a consulting firm to provide mandatory training for registered nurses who have begun the process of forming a union.

WMTW-TV reported on Tuesday that Reliant Labor Consultants advertises services such as “avoiding a union.”

The National Nurses United and the Maine State Nurses Association applied this month to the National Labor Relations Board to be recognized as a union for registered nurses at the Portland hospital. Nurses will vote on whether they want to form a union in the coming weeks.

The hospital says it opposes a union but respects the right of workers under the law to decide on union representation.
