The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has identified human remains found 27 miles off the coast of Maine more than 20 years ago.

The Portland Press Herald reports that a renewed attempt to identify the man led to confirmation that the remains belonged to 84-year-old Philip Kahn of Las Vegas.

The partially skeletonized remains were found in the Atlantic Ocean near the Grand Manan banks in July 2000.

Attempts to identify the body at the time using DNA and fingerprints were unsuccessful.

Kahn left Las Vegas and flew to New York City that month, but it’s unclear how he ended up in the ocean off the coast of Maine.

The Medical Examiner’s Office says the man’s next of kin has been notified.
