PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) — Maine’s expanded moose hunt is getting started in the far northern and Down East parts of the state.

The moose hunt is a major fall tourism draw in Maine, and there are hundreds more permits this year. Maine decided to boost the number of permits by more than 20 percent to 2,500 for this fall.

The moose season is broken into four stretches. The first stretch runs from Monday to Sept. 29 and is limited to wildlife management districts in rural, northern parts of Maine. The hunt opens up to a little more of the state in later pieces of the hunt, which take place in October and November
