Maine State Police say about 30 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 95 in Penobscot County Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred in the area of mile 174 northbound in Carmel.
The Maine Department of Public Safety said in an email that “some injuries” were reported. One individual had to be life-flighted to a Bangor hospital after suffering serious injuries, the email said. At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Maine State Police confirmed that ten people were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, including a state trooper who suffered minor injuries.
Initial reports say blinding sun may have caused the first crash, which happened at about 7:45 a.m. Police say they’re looking into what role weather may have played in the crash.
Public Safety said a “team of troopers and a fleet of wreckers” were on the scene working to clear the road. Police said at about 11:20 a.m. that the road had reopened to traffic.
State police are asking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the crash.
