AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Wardens say the recent subzero cold has made for good ice fishing conditions — for those hardy enough to venture outdoors.
Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist Jim Pellerin said most lakes and ponds have 8 inches of ice but the cold has kept some fishermen indoors.
The ice still not safe everywhere, and there’s some open water.
Wardens say the big bay has not set up on Sebago Lake, for example, but there’s 3 to 5 inches of ice from the southern end of the lake to Jordan Bay. On Long Lake, in Aroostook County, the ice is varying in thickness from 5 to 20 inches.
