Icy conditions blamed for multiple interstate crashes near Etna

Photo: Maine Department of Public Safety

Multiple crashes on I-95 in Penobscot County shut down part of the interstate on Monday.

Shannon Moss with the Department of Public Safety says I-95 south was closed due to crashes near Etna, Plymouth and Dixmont. Traffic was being diverted off the interstate at Exit 167.

Around noon, Moss said the interstate was expected to remain closed for another 4-6 hours, with vehicles off the road between mile markers 172-162 southbound. It had reopened by 4 p.m.

She says icy conditions developed quickly on Monday morning, causing multiple crashes involving passenger cars and tractor-trailers.

There were several injuries, but none appeared to be life-threatening.
