PORTLAND, Maine (AP) In-person absentee balloting got underway Monday in Portland, Lewiston and several other communities now that ballots have been delivered.

In Maine, voters can request that an absentee ballot be mailed to them, or they can complete the process in person in some locations. Either way, the ballots won’t be counted until the polls close on Election Day.

Voters are being encouraged to utilize absentee ballots because of the pandemic, and Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap has said as many at 600,000 people could vote that way.

As of last week, Maine voters had requested more than 260,000 absentee ballots for the Nov. 3 election, despite concerns about whether the U.S. Postal Service will deliver ballots on time.

That puts the state on a path to easily break a record four years of more than 190,000 absentee ballots cast.
