Inmate who died at Penobscot County Jail identified

Authorities have identified a woman who died at the Penobscot County Jail the same day she was taken into custody.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office says 39-year-old Jodi Melanson of Eastport was arrested in Bangor Saturday morning.

She was found unresponsive in her cell that night, with attempts to revive her by medical staff unsuccessful.

Investigators are awaiting the results of testing as they look into the death.

The sheriff’s office says there were no reports of any fights involving staff or other inmates.
